Outreach & Education
The most effective way to empower people is to provide them with the knowledge and skills necessary to help themselves. For this reason, education and outreach on issues of censorship is a crucial part of the CRC’s mission.
The CRC aims to inform the public about the state of censorship through a variety of fora, including the media, academic conferences and symposia, and testimony before political bodies in the United States and abroad. CRC will publish an annual report on the state of censorship in the world and has reached an agreement with the online publication Tehran Bureau to write regular columns on censorship in the Middle East and elsewhere. CRC will become a trusted voice in the national and international debate on censorship.
In addition to educating the public, CRC’s outreach efforts aim to provide the victims of censorship with the information they need to combat censorship within their communities. For example, the CRC is planning to develop anti-censorship kits, which it will distribute to individuals in countries like Iran. These kits will include educational materials in the country’s lingua franca, including instructions for anti-censorship programs like Haystack and Tor; recipients can then educate their families, friends, and neighbors. The ultimate goal is to empower the victims of censorship to take control of their own fate.
